ESPON – Natural hazard map update

ESPON – Natural hazard map update

The purpose of the project was to provide an update of the 2006 ESPON Hazards project results (ESPON 1.3.1 - The Spatial Effects and Management of Natural and Technological Hazards in Europe). This update was necessary because of the major costs, both financial as well as loss of life, associated with the impact of natural hazards on many parts of Europe that occur with alarming and apparently increasing frequency.

The prime focus of the update report was to secure an assessment of the territorially defined distribution (EU27+4) of vulnerability and risks associated with natural hazards in 2012, presented as a series of thematic hazard maps that can be compared with the 2006 assessment.

A summary of findings carried out by space4environment is provided in the ESPON Territorial Observations - Natural Hazards and Climate Change in European Regions (link to report).
