Workshops on Assessing and Mapping Ecosystem Condition || Working Group on Green Infrastructure and Restoration (GIR)
MAES Workshop on Assessing and Mapping Ecosystem Condition, Brussels, 27-28th June 2017
space4environment was participating in the MAES Workshop on Assessing and Mapping Ecosystem Condition, which was organized by the European Commission (EC) together with the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Topic Centres for Biodiversity (ETC-BD) and Urban Land Use Systems (ETC-ULS). The workshop took place the 27 and 28th of June 2017 at Brussels and gathered together more than 100 experts from different EU Institutions.
The goal of the workshop was to develop a common understanding of the analytical framework to be used for assessing ecosystem condition including relevant indicators to support Target 2 of the European Union (EU) Biodiversity Strategy to 2020. As a result of the workshop, the EC, EEA and ETC will prepare a white paper with a list of potential indicators to measure pressures, state/condition, biodiversity and impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem service capacity across EU. Variations between countries may arise due to presence of specific ecosystems, pressures, priorities for species protection or spatially explicit patterns of species distribution, but the proposed selection of indicators will ensure a coherent mapping of ecosystem condition over the EU.
7th meeting of the Working Group on Green Infrastructure and Restoration (GIR), Brussels, 29th June 2017
space4environment was invited to participate in 7th meeting of the Working Group on Green Infrastructure and Restoration (GIR). The meeting was organized by the Green Infrastructure Team of the European Commission (EC) Directorate General for Environment (DG ENV), and aimed at updating the Member States (MS) and other EU Institutions on relevant developments by the EC on GIR. The work of the day included a comprehensive presentation of the GI-related aspects of the “Action plan for nature, people and the economy” of the EC, and the discussion about the actions to improve coherence between BD targets with socioeconomic objectives of EU. There was also a review of progress in the implementation of the EU Green Infrastructure Strategy, which was complemented by some detailed GIR activities taking place at national MS. The meeting concluded with an update by the European Environment Agency (EEA) on the preparation of the MAES report on ''Informing strategic green infrastructure and restoration planning through mapping and assessment methods based on spatial and technical data”, to which space4environment is actively contributing.
