New EEA briefing on the potential of connecting Europe's protected areas based on ETC/ULS report published

Connecting Europe's protected areas through green-infrastructure as a Trans-European nature network could create huge benefit for European Ecosystems. A new EEA briefing which is based on the ETC/ULS report 'Contributions to building a coherent Trans-European Nature Network' which was prepared by space4environment and others in the consortium highlights the situation and importance of such an European nature network and the potential of expanding it.

Although a significant part of European protected areas is already connected through green infrastructure with other natural and semi-natural areas for 15% of the so far disconnected Natura 2000 sites the distance in between is less than 1km. Such situations as well as trans-national connections of ecosystems constitute large opportunities to expand the Trans-European Nature Network.
